Summary
Carex granularis, commonly known as Limestone Meadow Sedge, is an evergreen perennial grass native to calcareous wet meadows, floodplain forests, and moist prairies in the Eastern United States, Ontario, and Quebec. It typically grows to a height and width of 2 feet (0.6 meters) and 0.5-1 feet (0.2-0.3 meters), respectively. This sedge forms dense clumps of fine-textured, green foliage and produces inconspicuous brown flower spikes in late spring to early summer. The plant’s foliage remains attractive throughout the growing season and provides winter interest in the landscape.
Limestone Meadow Sedge is valued for its adaptability to wet conditions and its use in rain gardens, bioswales, and as a ground cover in moist areas. It is also used for erosion control along stream banks and in naturalized areas. This sedge prefers consistently moist to wet soils and full sun to part shade conditions. While it is generally low-maintenance, it can spread by rhizomes and may require management to keep it within bounds.
