Summary
Carex flaviformis, commonly known as Yellow Sedge, is an evergreen perennial sedge native to wetlands, bogs, and moist open grasslands in New Zealand. It typically grows to a height of 2-4 feet (0.6-1.2 meters) and can spread to about 4 feet (1.2 meters) wide. The plant features narrow, arching, yellow-green foliage that adds texture and color contrast to garden settings.
Yellow Sedge is valued for its year-round foliage and its ability to thrive in wet conditions, making it suitable for rain gardens, water features, and as a ground cover in moist areas. It is also used to stabilize soil in erosion-prone sites. In cultivation, it prefers full sun to partial shade and requires consistent moisture, reflecting its natural preference for wetland habitats. While it is tolerant of a range of soil types, it does best in soils that are acidic to neutral and well-drained. Carex flaviformis is generally low-maintenance but may require division every few years to rejuvenate clumps and prevent overcrowding.CC BY-SA 4.0
