Summary
Camissoniopsis micrantha, commonly known as miniature suncup or small evening primrose, is a small, hairy annual herb native to coastal dunes, sandy flats, and desert washes in the southwestern United States and Baja California, Mexico. It typically forms a low-growing basal rosette of leaves and reaches a height of 2-4 inches (5-10 cm). The plant produces small, cup-shaped yellow flowers that bloom from March to May, which dry to a reddish hue as they mature. The flowers are diminutive, with petals less than 0.2 inches long, making it the smallest member of its genus. The plant is not particularly showy due to its small size and flower coloration.
Miniature suncup is valued for its ability to thrive in challenging environments, such as sandy and disturbed soils, making it suitable for restoration projects and xeriscaping. It is also used in wildflower gardens for its early spring blooms and its role as a food source for native pollinators. In cultivation, it requires minimal care, preferring full sun and well-drained soils with low water needs once established. While not commonly available in nurseries, it can be grown from seed for those interested in native plant gardening.CC BY-SA 4.0
