Summary
Calystegia purpurata, commonly known as Pacific False Bindweed, is a deciduous perennial vine native to the coastal scrub and chaparral of California, as well as to the margins of coastal forests. It can climb to heights of 7-13 feet and spread 6-9 feet wide, often using other vegetation for support. The plant features heart-shaped leaves and large, showy flowers that are white to pink, blooming profusely from late spring through summer and sometimes into fall. The flowers are trumpet-shaped and can be quite attractive to pollinators.
Pacific False Bindweed is valued for its vigorous growth and ornamental flowers, which can cover fences or trellises, providing a natural screen. It is used in gardens for vertical interest or as a ground cover if allowed to sprawl. This species prefers well-drained soils and can tolerate a range of conditions from full sun to part shade. While it is drought-tolerant once established, it benefits from moderate watering, especially in drier climates. Gardeners should monitor its vigorous growth habit to prevent it from overwhelming other plants in the garden. There are no major disease problems, but it can be susceptible to aphids and spider mites.CC BY-SA 4.0
