Summary
Calochilus robertsonii, commonly known as the Purple Beard Orchid, is a terrestrial orchid native to open eucalyptus woodlands and coastal heathlands in southeastern Australia, including Tasmania, and is not naturally found in New Zealand. This perennial herb typically grows up to 60 centimeters in height and features a single, linear dark green leaf that emerges from its underground tuber. The Purple Beard Orchid produces a slender, erect flowering stem bearing up to nine green to brown flowers with distinctive purplish stripes from late winter to early summer (August to early December). The labellum, or lip of the flower, is notable for its striking purple, mauve, or bronze "beard," which is a cluster of colorful hairs that attract pollinators.
The Purple Beard Orchid is valued for its unique and showy flowers, which make it a sought-after species among orchid enthusiasts. It is used in specialized native plant gardens and conservation projects. Cultivation requires simulating its natural habitat, with well-drained soil, moderate water, and dappled sunlight to partial shade. It is not typically grown in general garden settings due to its specific requirements and is not known for being easy to maintain. There are no popular garden cultivars due to its rarity and cultivation challenges. Potential problems include root rot if overwatered and habitat loss in the wild.CC BY-SA 4.0
