Summary
Calathea crotalifera, commonly known as Rattlesnake Plant, is a rhizomatous perennial herb native to the understory of rainforests in Central and South America. It can reach up to 10 feet in height and is characterized by its large, green, paddle-shaped leaves with wavy edges and a distinctive pattern that resembles reptilian skin. The plant produces inflorescences that bear a resemblance to a rattlesnake’s tail, hence its common name. These inflorescences are yellow and cone-shaped, emerging on tall spikes above the foliage, and are most notable during the summer months. The flowers are not particularly showy, but the bracts that hold them can be quite decorative.
The Rattlesnake Plant is valued for its striking foliage and unique inflorescences, making it a popular choice for tropical and subtropical gardens, as well as indoor plant collections. It thrives in humid conditions and requires consistent moisture, well-draining soil, and dappled light to partial shade, mimicking its natural rainforest habitat. It is not drought-tolerant and should not be allowed to dry out. In cultivation, it is often used as an accent plant in shaded areas or as a bold foliage plant in interior spaces. While generally easy to maintain, it can be susceptible to spider mites and root rot if overwatered. It is also sensitive to cold and should be protected from temperatures below 60°F (15°C).CC BY-SA 4.0
