Summary
Bulbine latifolia, commonly known as Broad-Leaved Bulbine, is a succulent perennial herb native to the rocky grasslands and open scrublands of Southern Africa, particularly in areas with well-drained soil. It typically grows to a height of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters) and spreads 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 meters) wide. The plant forms clumps of fleshy, broad, aloe-like leaves and produces racemes of star-shaped yellow flowers during the winter and spring months, which are attractive to a variety of pollinators.
Broad-Leaved Bulbine is valued for its drought tolerance and the striking contrast between its lush foliage and bright blooms. It is often used in rock gardens, succulent plantings, and as a ground cover in xeriscapes. This plant thrives in full sun and requires very little water once established, making it an excellent choice for water-wise gardens. It prefers well-draining soil and is tolerant of poor soil conditions. While generally pest-free, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered.
