Summary
Brodiaea elegans, commonly known as Harvest Brodiaea or Elegant Cluster-lily, is a perennial herb native to the grasslands, open woodlands, and chaparral of California and Oregon. It typically grows in well-drained soils and is adapted to Mediterranean climates with wet winters and dry summers. This plant forms a corm underground and produces a stout inflorescence up to 20 inches tall. The flowers are bright purple with white or pale purple staminodes, blooming in late spring to early summer, usually in May. The flowers are showy and attract pollinators such as bees.
Harvest Brodiaea is valued for its ornamental flowers and is used in native plant gardens, rock gardens, and as a cut flower due to its striking appearance and long vase life. It is relatively low maintenance and thrives in full sun to part shade. It is important to provide well-draining soil to prevent corm rot.
