Summary

Bridelia micrantha, commonly known as Coastal Golden-Leaf, is a deciduous tree native to a variety of habitats in tropical and southern Africa. It thrives in coastal forests, riverine forests, woodlands, and along forest margins, often in areas with well-drained soils. This species typically reaches heights of up to 66 feet (20 meters) and features a dense, widely spreading crown that provides significant shade. The bark is dark grey and rough, adding to its visual interest.

Coastal Golden-Leaf is valued for its large, glossy, alternate leaves which turn golden-yellow before shedding, and its inconspicuous greenish-yellow flowers that appear in small clusters. Although the flowers are small, they are significant for their role as a larval food plant for certain butterfly species. After flowering, the tree produces small, spherical fruits that turn purple when ripe. In cultivation, Bridelia micrantha is appreciated for its dense foliage and is often used for shade or as a windbreak in large gardens and parks. It is also planted for its medicinal uses in traditional practices. The tree prefers full sun to partial shade, thriving in a range of soil types provided they are well-drained. While generally pest-resistant, it can occasionally suffer from leaf spot diseases.CC BY-SA 4.0
