Summary

Bambusa vulgaris, commonly known as Common Bamboo, is an evergreen perennial grass native to Indochina and the Province of Yunnan in China. It typically forms moderately loose clumps and can reach heights of up to 59 feet (18 meters). The culms are lemon-yellow with green stripes, and the foliage consists of dark green leaves. While flowering is rare, when it does occur, it happens gregariously with all plants in an area blooming simultaneously, which can lead to widespread die-off post-flowering. The rarity of seeds and fruits is due to low pollen viability from irregular meiosis.

Common Bamboo is valued for its rapid growth and the visual impact of its striking culms. It is widely used as an ornamental plant in tropical and subtropical gardens and is popular for creating living fences and border hedges. It also serves as an effective erosion control measure. In cultivation, it adapts well to full sun or part shade and thrives in soils with medium drainage.CC BY-SA 4.0
