Summary

Azara dentata, commonly known as Toothed Azara, is an evergreen shrub native to the temperate rainforests of Central Chile. It typically grows to a height of 15-20 feet (5-6 meters) and a width of 10-12 feet (3-3.7 meters). The plant features small, glossy, dark green leaves with serrated margins, giving it its common name. In spring, Toothed Azara produces small, inconspicuous yellow flowers with a vanilla-like fragrance, which can be quite showy when the plant is viewed up close. The flowers are followed by small, non-edible berries.

Toothed Azara is valued for its dense, evergreen foliage and sweetly scented flowers, making it an attractive choice for privacy screens, hedges, or as a background plant in mixed borders. It is adaptable to a range of soil types, provided they have good drainage, and it prefers a sheltered position in full sun to part shade. While it is relatively low-maintenance, occasional pruning may be necessary to maintain its shape. In areas with harsh winters, it may require protection, as it is not very frost-tolerant.CC BY-SA 4.0
