Summary

Astragalus pomonensis, commonly known as Pomona milkvetch, is a perennial herb native to chaparral and coastal sage scrub habitats of southern California and northern Baja California. It typically grows up to 31 inches tall and has a bushy form with thick, hollow stems. The leaves are pinnately compound with oval-shaped leaflets. From late winter to early spring, it produces large inflorescences of cream-colored, pea-like flowers that are moderately showy. Following flowering, it develops distinctive bladdery legume pods that dry to a papery texture, which can be of interest in the garden.

Pomona milkvetch is valued for its drought tolerance and its ability to thrive in poor, sandy soils, making it suitable for xeriscaping and restoration projects. It is also used in native plant gardens and as part of pollinator-friendly landscapes, as its flowers attract bees. In cultivation, it requires well-drained soils, minimal water once established, and full sun to part shade. While not commonly available in the nursery trade, it can be grown from seed or cuttings. There are no major disease problems associated with this plant, but it may not compete well with aggressive non-native species.CC BY-SA 4.0
