Summary

Aster mongolicus, commonly known as Mongolian Aster or Dailian Flower, is a perennial herb that is native to grasslands, meadows, and forest margins in Southern and Eastern Asia, including regions of Mongolia and northern China. It exhibits a moderate growth rate, reaching heights of 1-3 feet (0.3-0.9 meters) and a spread of 1-1.5 feet (0.3-0.5 meters). The plant forms a clump of erect stems with lance-shaped leaves, and during the summer and fall, it produces a profusion of blue or purple flowers that are highly attractive to pollinators. The flowers are showy and daisy-like, with a yellow center surrounded by elongated petals.

Mongolian Aster is valued for its vibrant, long-lasting blooms and its ability to attract butterflies and other beneficial insects. It is often used in perennial borders, wildflower gardens, and as a component in pollinator-friendly landscaping. This aster is relatively low-maintenance, thriving in a range of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils, with medium drainage. It prefers full sun to part shade and can tolerate some drought once established. While generally disease-resistant, it can be susceptible to powdery mildew in humid conditions. Deadheading spent flowers can encourage a longer blooming period and prevent self-seeding if undesired.CC BY-SA 4.0
