Asplenium fontanum, commonly known as Fountain Spleenwort or Smooth Rock Spleenwort, is a perennial herbaceous fern native to rocky limestone habitats, including cliffs, gorges, and shaded rock faces in Europe. It is particularly adapted to the mountains of Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, and Austria, thriving in cool, moist, and shady conditions at altitudes ranging from 984 to 7,874 feet (300 to 2400 meters). The fern typically forms dense tufts of arching fronds that can reach up to 8 inches (20 cm) in length. These fronds are pinnate, meaning they have a central stem with leaflets on either side, and the pinnules are finely toothed, giving them a delicate appearance.

Fountain Spleenwort is valued for its ability to grow in difficult rocky environments and is often used in rock gardens and for naturalizing in shaded, moist areas of the landscape. It is appreciated for its evergreen foliage and the textural contrast it provides when planted among other shade-loving plants. In cultivation, it requires well-drained, alkaline soil, consistent moisture, and protection from intense sunlight. While it is not prone to many diseases, it can suffer from root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils.
