Asplenium abyssinicum, commonly known as African Bird’s Nest Fern, Abyssinian Spleenwort, or Black Spleenwort, is a perennial herbaceous fern native to the understory of montane forests in tropical Africa. It thrives in high-altitude regions, often found on shaded, rocky slopes and cliff faces. This fern typically grows at a moderate rate to a height of 1-2.5 feet (0.3-0.8 meters) and a width of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters). Its fronds are long, arching, and dark green, forming a rosette that resembles a bird’s nest. The plant does not produce flowers or seeds, as it reproduces via spores that are located on the underside of the fronds.

African Bird’s Nest Fern is valued for its lush, tropical appearance and is often used as an ornamental plant in shaded garden areas, containers, or as a houseplant. It is relatively easy to maintain, requiring consistent moisture without waterlogging. The fern prefers part shade, though it can tolerate low light conditions, making it suitable for indoor cultivation. It thrives in medium or fast-draining loam or clay soils with a high organic content.
