Asarum fauriei var. takaoi, commonly known as Takao’s Wild Ginger, is a perennial herb that is native to the forest floors of Japan, specifically thriving in the understory of deciduous and mixed forests. It is a slow-growing plant that typically reaches a height of 0.3-0.5 feet (0.09-0.15 meters) and spreads 0.5-1 feet (0.15-0.3 meters). The plant features heart-shaped, glossy green leaves that provide a lush groundcover. Its flowers, which appear in spring, are bell-shaped, green or brown, and often hidden beneath the foliage, making them inconspicuous yet intriguing upon closer inspection.

Takao’s Wild Ginger is valued for its attractive foliage and its ability to form dense mats, which can suppress weeds and stabilize soil in shaded garden areas. It is an excellent choice for woodland gardens, shade gardens, and as a ground cover under larger plants. While it prefers part shade to full shade, it is adaptable to various soil types, including medium draining loam or clay, and requires consistent moisture to thrive.
