Summary
Artemisia caerulescens subsp. gallica, commonly known as French Mugwort or French Wormwood, is a perennial herb native to limestone cliffs, coastal areas, and rocky slopes in Western Europe and Northern Africa. It typically grows at a moderate rate to a height of 1-3 feet (0.3-0.9 meters) and a width of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters). This plant has a bushy habit with silvery-green, aromatic foliage that is deeply cut and feathery in appearance. The yellow flowers are small and inconspicuous, blooming in the summer and fall, and are not the main attraction of this plant.
French Mugwort is valued for its aromatic foliage and its ability to thrive in poor soils, making it a suitable choice for rock gardens, xeriscaping, and coastal landscapes. It is also used in herbal medicine and as a culinary herb in some cultures. In cultivation, it requires full sun and well-drained sandy or loamy soil. It can become drought-tolerant once established. While generally disease-free, it can occasionally suffer from root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
