Amelanchier stolonifera, commonly known as Running Serviceberry or Running Juneberry, is a deciduous, suckering shrub native to a range of habitats including open woodlands, forest edges, and wet meadows across eastern North America. It typically grows 1-4 feet tall and spreads 3-6 feet wide. The plant forms colonies by sending out underground runners, which contribute to its use in erosion control. The Running Serviceberry is notable for its multi-season interest, featuring clusters of showy white flowers in early spring, which give way to small, sweet, edible berries that ripen to dark purple in early summer and are favored by birds and other wildlife.

The berries are not only a food source for wildlife but are also used in jellies, pies, and other culinary applications. In autumn, the foliage turns a vibrant red-orange, adding to the plant’s ornamental value. Amelanchier stolonifera is well-suited for naturalized plantings, woodland gardens, and as a border shrub. It is adaptable to a variety of soil conditions, from well-drained to moist, and prefers full sun to part shade.
