Aframomum daniellii, commonly known as African cardamom, is a perennial herb native to the understory of tropical rainforests in West Africa, from Sierra Leone to Angola. This species thrives in warm, humid conditions and is often found in the shaded, moist soils of forest clearings and along riverbanks. It typically grows to a height of 2-3 meters and features lance-shaped leaves with a glossy texture. The plant produces small, inconspicuous flowers that are usually white or pale yellow, followed by reddish-brown seed pods that contain the aromatic seeds used as a spice.

African cardamom is highly valued for its aromatic seeds, which are used in culinary applications similar to true cardamom. The seeds are harvested for their essential oils, which contribute to the plant’s fragrance and flavor. In cultivation, Aframomum daniellii prefers a partially shaded location with high humidity and well-drained, fertile soil. It requires consistent moisture but does not tolerate waterlogged conditions. The plant is not only grown for its culinary uses but also for its medicinal properties, which include laxative, anti-parasitic, and antimicrobial effects.
