Summary

Acmispon rigidus, commonly known as Shrubby Deervetch, is a deciduous perennial subshrub or herb native to chaparral, coastal sage scrub, and dry slopes in the Southwestern USA and Baja California. It typically grows to 0.5–1.5 meters tall with a sprawling form. The leaves are irregularly pinnate or palmate with three or four leaflets, each 5–15 mm long. Its flowers are showy, starting yellow and turning red or purple as they age, blooming from late spring to early summer.

Shrubby Deervetch is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor soils, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and naturalistic plantings. It is also used for erosion control on slopes and disturbed areas. In cultivation, it requires full sun and can tolerate low to medium amounts of water, preferring soils with medium to fast drainage. While it is not commonly afflicted by diseases, it can be sensitive to overwatering, which may lead to root rot.CC BY-SA 4.0
