Summary

Acer miyabei subsp. miaotaiense, commonly known as Miaotai Maple, is a deciduous tree native to the temperate mixed forests of northern and central China. It typically grows at a moderate rate to a height of 20-30 feet (6-9 meters) and a width of 15-20 feet (4.6-6 meters). This maple species has a rounded to oval crown with a dense branching structure. Its leaves are deeply lobed, resembling the classic maple leaf shape, and turn yellow in the fall, providing seasonal interest. The greenish-yellow flowers are not particularly showy and appear in spring, followed by winged samaras (maple fruits) that can be of interest to wildlife.

Miaotai Maple is valued for its adaptability to urban conditions and is often used in street plantings, parks, and residential landscapes. It is relatively low maintenance, tolerating a range of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils, provided they have medium to fast drainage. The tree prefers full sun to part shade. While it is not known for any significant disease or pest problems, it can suffer from leaf scorch in excessively dry conditions. Gardeners should be aware that like many maples, it may develop surface roots that can disrupt pavements or lawns if planted too close.CC BY-SA 4.0
