Summary
Yucca schottii, commonly known as Schott’s Yucca, is an evergreen succulent native to the desert grasslands and oak woodlands of the Southwestern United States, particularly in Arizona and New Mexico, as well as Northern Mexico. It is a nothospecies, a natural hybrid, typically found at higher elevations than other tree-like yuccas, which contributes to its common name, mountain yucca. This species can reach up to 16 feet (5 meters) in height, with slender trunks that are rarely more than 12 inches (30 cm) across, and branches that start high above the ground. The leaves are long, narrow, and have a blue-green color with a waxy coating. During the summer, it produces showy clusters of white flowers, which are followed by fleshy, egg-shaped fruit.
Schott’s Yucca is valued for its striking architectural form, making it a focal point in xeriscapes and desert gardens. It is drought-tolerant and requires minimal maintenance, which is ideal for water-wise gardening. This yucca is also used as an accent or specimen plant in rock gardens and can be grown in containers. It thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained soils, such as sandy or gravelly substrates. While it is generally pest-resistant, it can occasionally suffer from yucca weevil infestations.CC BY-SA 4.0
