Vitis riparia, commonly known as Riverbank Grape or Frost Grape, is a deciduous, perennial climbing vine native to riverbanks, floodplains, and moist forests of central and eastern North America. It can grow up to 50 feet (15 meters) long and is often found sprawling over other vegetation or climbing with the help of tendrils. The vine produces small, greenish flowers in the late spring, which are not particularly showy, followed by clusters of dark purple grapes that mature in late summer to fall. The bark is brown and shaggy, peeling in strips on older stems.

Riverbank Grape is valued for its ability to stabilize soil and provide habitat and food for wildlife, including birds and mammals. The grapes are edible and can be used to make jelly, juice, and wine, though they are quite tart. It is often used for restoration projects and can be grown for fruit production or as a naturalizing element in garden landscapes. Vitis riparia prefers moist, well-drained soils and can thrive in full sun to part shade. It is relatively low-maintenance but may require pruning to manage growth.
