Summary
Vaccinium darrowii, commonly known as Darrow’s Blueberry or Darrow’s Evergreen Blueberry, is an evergreen subshrub or shrub native to pine flatwoods, sandy scrublands, and coastal dunes in the Southeastern USA. It typically grows 30–120 cm (0.98–3.94 ft) tall and wide, with a compact, rounded habit. The small, white, bell-shaped flowers bloom in spring and are followed by blue-black berries with a whitish waxy bloom, each 4–6 mm in diameter. The berries are not only edible but also attractive to wildlife. Darrow’s Blueberry is valued for its ornamental qualities, including its evergreen foliage and the showy fruit display.
This species is suitable for a variety of horticultural uses, including as an ornamental plant in home gardens, native plant and wildlife gardens, and for natural landscaping projects. It thrives in acidic, well-drained sandy soils and benefits from mulching with pine needles or other acidic organic matter. Darrow’s Blueberry prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade, and it requires low to medium amounts of water once established. It is relatively low maintenance and can be used as a ground cover or in mass plantings for a textured landscape effect.
