Sporobolus giganteus, commonly known as Giant Dropseed, is a perennial grass native to the tallgrass prairies, open woodlands, and scrublands of the South Western United States and Northern Mexico. This species typically reaches a height of 4-6 feet (1.2-1.8 meters) and a width of 6-8 feet (1.8-2.4 meters), forming dense clumps with fine-textured, arching foliage. The inflorescence is a large, open, airy panicle that appears in late summer to fall, adding a delicate texture to the landscape. The flowers are not particularly showy, but the seed heads are attractive and persist into winter, providing visual interest and food for wildlife.

Giant Dropseed is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor soils, making it an excellent choice for naturalistic plantings, restoration projects, and erosion control. It is also used in xeriscaping and as an accent plant in dry gardens. While it has historical significance as a food source, its use in modern cultivation is primarily ornamental.
