Sophora chrysophylla, commonly known as māmane, is a deciduous shrub or tree endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. It occupies a variety of habitats, including low and high shrublands, dry and mixed mesic forests, and occasionally wet forests, typically found at elevations ranging from 98 to 9514 feet. Māmane can grow up to 49 feet tall and is characterized by its ridged golden brown branches. It produces showy yellow flowers during the winter and spring months, which are an important food source for the endangered palila bird, relying on the seeds for sustenance.

In cultivation, māmane is valued for its bright yellow flowers and its ability to adapt to a range of soil conditions, though it prefers well-drained substrates. It is used in reforestation projects and as an ornamental plant in Hawaiian landscapes. The tree’s wood, known for its density and durability, was historically utilized by Native Hawaiians to make tools and for construction purposes. Gardeners should be aware that māmane requires moderate water and does best in full sun to part shade.
