Summary
Sloanea sinensis, commonly known as Chinese Sloanea or Chinese Fairy Lantern Tree, is a moderately growing deciduous tree native to the subtropical forests of Southern China and Taiwan. It typically reaches a height of 20-40 feet (6-12 meters) and a width of 15-20 feet (4.6-6 meters). The tree is characterized by its dense, rounded canopy and rough, fissured bark. During the summer, it produces large, white, showy flowers that are attractive to pollinators. The fruits are spiny capsules that add visual interest in the landscape.
Chinese Sloanea is valued for its ornamental flowers and unique fruit, making it a desirable addition to botanical gardens and arboreta. It is also used in urban settings for its moderate size and tolerance of part shade. This species prefers medium to fast-draining clay or loam soils and requires medium amounts of water, making it relatively easy to maintain. While it can tolerate full sun, it also grows well in part shade, which can be beneficial in mixed plantings or woodland gardens.CC BY-SA 4.0
