Semiarundinaria fastuosa, commonly known as Narihira Bamboo, is an evergreen perennial grass native to the forest edges and mountain slopes of Japan. It can grow up to 7 meters (23 feet) tall and 2 meters (7 feet) broad, featuring dark green cylindrical canes and dense tufts of lanceolate, glossy green leaves that can reach up to 20 centimeters (8 inches) in length. The plant’s appearance is characterized by its upright growth habit and the striking contrast between its canes and lush foliage, which can add a vertical element to garden designs.

Narihira Bamboo is valued for its rapid growth and its use as an architectural plant or screen, providing quick privacy and a lush backdrop in garden settings. It is also appreciated for its low maintenance requirements once established. In cultivation, it prefers a position in full sun to partial shade and requires well-drained soil. While it can tolerate a range of soil types, it thrives in moist, fertile soils. Regular watering is important, especially during dry periods.
