Sedum makinoi, commonly known as Japanese Stonecrop, is a perennial succulent native to the rocky coastal cliffs and alpine regions of Japan, China and Korea. It forms a dense mat of small, round, fleshy green leaves and produces clusters of star-shaped yellow flowers in the summer, which are moderately showy. Typically, it reaches a height of 2-4 inches (5-10 cm) with a spread of 6-12 inches (15-30 cm). The plant’s appearance and growth habit make it an attractive ground cover or accent in rock gardens.

Japanese Stonecrop is valued for its ease of maintenance, drought tolerance, and ability to thrive in poor soils with good drainage. It is often utilized in green roofs, rock gardens, and as a ground cover due to its ornamental foliage and adaptability to various garden conditions. It prefers full sun to partial shade and requires minimal watering once established, making it suitable for xeriscaping. While generally disease-free, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils.
