Summary
Rostellularia obtusa, commonly known as Sharp-Pointed Rostellularia, Spiked Rostellularia, or Sharp Rostellularia, is a perennial herb native to tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and Australia, typically found in wetlands, marshy areas, and along stream banks. It grows at a moderate rate to a typical height of 1-3 feet (0.3-0.9 meters) and a width of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters). This plant is characterized by its lance-shaped leaves and purple, tubular flowers that are quite showy, blooming profusely in the summer and fall. The flowers are arranged in spikes, adding to the plant’s ornamental value.
Rostellularia obtusa is valued for its ability to thrive in wet conditions, making it suitable for water gardens, rain gardens, and as a marginal plant in ponds. It is also used for erosion control due to its dense growth habit. In cultivation, it requires full sun to part shade and prefers slow-draining loam or clay soils, with high or very high amounts of water. While it can be a beautiful addition to the right environment, it is important to note that Rostellularia obtusa can be invasive outside its native range, so gardeners should check local regulations before planting.CC BY-SA 4.0
