It is typically found in forest margins and scrub areas, adapting well to the cool and moist highland climates. This species can reach up to 13 feet in height and is characterized by its spiny stems and compound leaves with 5-13 serrated leaflets. The white flowers of Rosa omeiensis are notable for having just four petals, a rarity among roses, and they bloom in late spring to early summer. The flowers are modest in size, measuring 1-1.4 inches in diameter, and are followed by distinctive red to orange-yellow, bristly hips that are 0.3-0.6 inches in diameter.

The Omei Rose is valued for its ornamental features, particularly the forma pteracantha, which is sought after for its large, bright red thorns that provide a striking visual interest. The plant is used in gardens for its unique appearance and is also appreciated for its ability to adapt to a range of soil conditions, though it prefers well-drained, loamy soils. It requires moderate watering and can tolerate partial shade, although it flourishes best in full sun. While it is not commonly known for significant disease problems, it can be susceptible to typical rose ailments such as black spot and powdery mildew.
