Summary
Rhinanthus glacialis, commonly known as Glacier Yellow Rattle or Alpine Yellow Rattle, is an annual herb native to the grassy meadows of alpine and subalpine regions in the Alps and Pyrenees. It typically grows to a height of 0.5-1.5 feet (0.15-0.5 meters) and is characterized by its serrated leaves and bright yellow, bilaterally symmetrical flowers that bloom in the summer, adding a splash of color to the landscape. The plant is named for the distinctive rattle sound its seeds make when the inflated seed pods are shaken by the wind.
Glacier Yellow Rattle is valued for its showy flowers and its ability to thrive in challenging mountainous environments. It is often used in wildflower meadows, rock gardens, and naturalistic plantings. This species is particularly interesting to ecologically-minded gardeners because it is semi-parasitic, obtaining some of its nutrients from the roots of neighboring grasses, which can help to maintain a balance in grass-dominated ecosystems. It requires well-drained soils and can tolerate a range of soil types from loam to clay. While it prefers full sun or part shade, it is also quite adaptable to varying light conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
