Summary
Ranunculus laxicaulis, commonly known as Spearwort, is a perennial herb native to the wet meadows, streambanks, and marshy areas of the southeastern United States. It typically grows 1-2 feet tall and features bright yellow flowers that bloom in the spring, which are moderately showy and attract pollinators. The plant has a clumping form with elongated, lance-shaped leaves and slender stems that may sprawl if unsupported.
Spearwort is valued for its vibrant yellow flowers and its ability to thrive in wet conditions, making it an excellent choice for rain gardens, water features, and naturalized wetland plantings. It is also used to stabilize soil in riparian zones. In cultivation, it requires consistently moist to wet soils and can tolerate a range of light conditions from full sun to partial shade. While it is not drought-tolerant, it is relatively low maintenance when its moisture requirements are met. Spearwort is not known for significant pest or disease problems, but it can be sensitive to dry conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
