Summary
Potentilla californica, commonly known as California Cinquefoil, is a perennial herb that is native to California, but its habitat extends beyond meadows and forest openings to include chaparral and coastal scrub areas. It typically grows at a moderate rate to a height and width of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters). The plant features palmate leaves and bears bright yellow flowers from late spring to early summer, which are moderately showy and attract pollinators. The flowers are followed by small, dry fruits that are not ornamentally significant.
California Cinquefoil is appreciated for its drought tolerance once established, making it a suitable choice for xeriscaping and native plant gardens. It is also used in restoration projects and as a ground cover in residential landscapes. While it thrives in full sun or part shade, it is adaptable to various soil types, including clay and loam, provided they have medium drainage. Regular watering is recommended until the plant is established. Gardeners should be aware that while Potentilla californica is not known for serious pest or disease problems, it can suffer from root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly draining soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
