Summary
Polypodium calirhiza, commonly known as nested polypody, is a perennial fern native to the understory of coastal and montane forests, as well as chaparral and oak woodlands in California and Oregon, USA. It is also found in similar habitats in several Mexican states, including Colima, Jalisco, Mexico State, Oaxaca, and Veracruz. This fern can grow both terrestrially and epiphytically on tree trunks and rocks, showcasing its adaptability. It typically has broad, oval-shaped leaflets, which are deeply cut into lobes, giving it a lacy appearance. The fronds of nested polypody can reach up to 60 centimeters in length and are evergreen, providing year-round interest.
Nested polypody is valued for its ease of maintenance and adaptability to a variety of growing conditions, making it suitable for shaded gardens, rockeries, and as a complement to other woodland plants. It prefers well-drained, humus-rich soil and can tolerate drought once established, although it thrives with consistent moisture. It requires shade to part shade and is relatively free of pests and diseases. In cultivation, it is often used for its attractive foliage and as a ground cover in shaded areas.CC BY-SA 4.0
