Platymiscium pinnatum, commonly known as Panama Redwood, Macacauba, Hormigo, Granadillo, or Quira, is a slow-growing deciduous tree. It is native to the seasonally dry tropical forests, including those in Mexico, Central and South America. This species typically reaches heights of 60-120 feet (18-37 meters) and is known for its dense, hard wood and canopy that provides significant shade. The tree’s flowers are small, white to cream-colored, and though not particularly showy, they do attract pollinators when they bloom in the spring. The bark is smooth and gray, and the tree produces seed pods that are attractive to wildlife.

Panama Redwood is valued for its durable, reddish-brown wood, which is used in fine furniture and cabinetry. In cultivation, it is less commonly found but can be used as a specimen tree in large landscapes. It requires full sun and medium amounts of water, and it adapts well to a variety of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils, provided they have good drainage.
