Summary
Phacelia egena, commonly known as Kaweah River phacelia, is a perennial herb native to the chaparral, oak woodlands, and coniferous forests of California, often found in the Sierra Nevada foothills. It can also be found in similar habitats in Oregon and Arizona. This species typically reaches up to 24 inches in height and features hairy stems and lance-shaped leaves. The inflorescence is a curving cyme of white to cream bell-shaped flowers with prominent stamens, blooming from late spring to early summer. The flowers are moderately showy and attract pollinators such as bees.
Kaweah River phacelia is appreciated for its drought tolerance and ability to adapt to various environments, making it a suitable choice for native plant gardens, restoration projects, and xeriscaping. It prefers full sun to partial shade and requires well-drained soils. While it is not commonly used in traditional garden settings, its resilience and attractive flowers make it a valuable addition to wildflower mixes and naturalistic plantings. Gardeners should be aware that Phacelia species can self-seed prolifically and may require management to prevent unwanted spread.CC BY-SA 4.0
