Summary
Petrophile biloba, commonly known as Granite Petrophile, is an evergreen shrub native to the kwongan heathlands and granite outcrops of Western Australia. It is characterized by its pinnately-divided leaves with sharply-pointed tips and distinctive oval heads of hairy, grey to pink flowers. This shrub typically reaches a height of 1–2 m (3 ft 3 in – 6 ft 7 in) and features hairy branchlets that become smooth (glabrous) as they age. The leaves are 15–20 mm (0.59–0.79 in) long, attached to a petiole up to 20 mm (0.79 in) long, and are pinnately-divided to the mid-rib with two or three lobes, each ending in a sharply-pointed tip. The flowers, which bloom from June to October, are arranged in leaf axils in sessile, oval heads about 15 mm (0.59 in) long, sometimes clustered, with deciduous involucral bracts at the base. The flowers themselves are 17–25 mm (0.67–0.98 in) long, predominantly grey to pink, and hairy. The fruit is a nut, fused with others in an oval head 10–14 mm (0.39–0.55 in) long.
Granite Petrophile is valued for its unique foliage and flowers, which add texture and subtle color to gardens. It is well-suited for rockeries, native plant gardens, and as a feature plant in xeriscaping due to its low water requirements. In cultivation, it thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained soils, tolerating both medium and fast-draining conditions. While it is generally low-maintenance, it may be susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils. Gardeners should also be aware that this plant does not transplant well due to its sensitive root system.CC BY-SA 4.0
