Summary
Pavonia burchellii, commonly known as Mafipa or Burchell’s Pavonia, is a deciduous shrub native to the rocky hillsides and open scrublands of Southern Africa. It typically grows at a moderate rate to a height and width of 1.5-2 feet (0.46-0.6 meters). The plant features a compact, rounded form with soft, velvety leaves and bears pink, hibiscus-like flowers that are quite showy, blooming profusely in the spring and summer months. The flowers attract pollinators, adding to the ecological value of the plant in its native habitat.
Burchell’s Pavonia is valued for its ornamental flowers and its ability to adapt to a range of garden settings. It is often used in border plantings, rock gardens, and as a specimen in xeriscaping due to its drought tolerance once established. While it prefers full sun to part shade, it is adaptable to various soil types, including sandy or loam soils, provided they offer medium to fast drainage. Regular watering is needed to establish the plant, but it can tolerate drier conditions once mature. Gardeners should be aware that it may require protection from frost in colder climates.CC BY-SA 4.0
