Paspalum thunbergii, commonly known as Thunberg’s paspalum or Knotroot paspalum, is a semi-deciduous grass that is native to East Asia, including China, Japan, and Korea. It is typically found in wetlands, along streams, and in moist open grasslands. This grass grows at a moderate rate to a height of 2-4 feet (0.6-1.2 meters) and has a spreading habit with fibrous roots. It features narrow, linear leaves and produces yellow or green flowers that are inconspicuous, blooming in the summer. The inflorescences are typically spike-like racemes that can add a subtle texture to the garden.

Thunberg’s paspalum is valued for its ability to stabilize soil and is often used for erosion control in suitable climates. It thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers medium to wet conditions, making it suitable for rain gardens and areas with poor drainage. It is adaptable to a variety of soil types, including clay and loam, but requires consistent moisture for optimal growth.
