Summary
Parapolystichum acuminatum, synonym Lastreopsis acuminata, commonly known as Creeping Shield Fern, Glossy Shield Fern, or Shiny Shield Fern, is a small, evergreen fern native to the understory of wet eucalyptus forests and cool temperate rainforests in eastern Australia. It often grows near streams, contributing to the lush undergrowth typical of these habitats. This fern typically forms a dense clump of arching fronds that can reach up to 1.5 meters in length, with a glossy texture that gives it its common names.
Creeping Shield Fern is appreciated for its lush, green foliage and its ability to thrive in moist, shady conditions, making it an excellent choice for shaded garden areas, ferneries, and as an understory plant in woodland gardens. It requires consistently moist soil, high humidity, and protection from strong winds. It is relatively low maintenance, but gardeners should ensure it does not dry out. While it prefers shade, it can tolerate some morning sun if kept moist. It is not known to have significant disease or pest problems, but it can be sensitive to overexposure to sunlight and drying out.CC BY-SA 4.0
