Summary
Oreojuncus trifidus, commonly known as Highland Rush or Three-leaved Rush, is a perennial herb that is native to alpine and subarctic regions across the Northern Hemisphere, including northern and eastern Canada, northeastern United States, Greenland, Iceland, Scandinavia, northern Britain, and northern Asia. It typically grows up to 16 inches tall and is adapted to harsh, high-elevation environments such as talus slopes, cliffs, fellfields, tundra, and alpine meadows. Highland Rush prefers dry to moist conditions and can grow in both calcareous and acidic soils, often forming colonies through its rhizomes.
Highland Rush is valued for its ability to thrive in challenging alpine garden settings, where it can provide textural contrast with its slender, grass-like leaves. It is used in rock gardens, alpine collections, and as a ground cover in suitable climates. This species requires well-drained soil and can tolerate a range of light conditions from full sun to partial shade. While it is generally low-maintenance, it is susceptible to damage from trampling due to its delicate nature and preferred habitats. Gardeners should take care to plant it in areas where it will not be disturbed by foot traffic.CC BY-SA 4.0
