Summary
Mukdenia rossii, commonly known as Mukdenia, is a deciduous perennial herb native to the forest margins and rocky slopes in East Asia, particularly in China and Korea. It typically grows to a height of 0.8-2 feet (0.2-0.6 meters) and a width of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters). Mukdenia rossii has palmate leaves that emerge bronze in spring, turning green as they mature, and provide a striking display of bright red to orange fall color. Its small, star-shaped white flowers bloom in early to mid-spring and are moderately showy. The plant forms a clump that slowly spreads over time, making it suitable for ground cover.
Mukdenia rossii is valued for its attractive foliage, particularly its vibrant fall colors, and its adaptability to a range of garden settings. It is often used in woodland gardens, shaded border fronts, and as an understory plant in shaded areas. This plant prefers part shade but can tolerate morning sun, requires consistently moist soil with good drainage, and is best protected from strong winds. While generally low-maintenance, Mukdenia rossii can be susceptible to leaf scorch if exposed to too much sun or drought conditions. It is not known for being invasive and does not have aggressive roots, making it a safe choice for most garden situations.CC BY-SA 4.0
