Summary
Muhlenbergia uniflora, commonly known as one-flowered muhly, is a small perennial grass native to moist meadows, wet prairies, and marshy areas in the northeastern USA and adjacent Canada. It typically forms tufts reaching 8-16 inches in height. The plant is characterized by its delicate, purple one-flowered spikelets that are arranged in open, diffuse panicles, giving it a fine-textured and airy appearance. The grass is non-rhizomatous, and the glumes are much shorter than the lemmas, which are the outer bracts of the spikelets.
One-flowered muhly is valued for its ornamental qualities, particularly its subtle beauty and ability to thrive in wet conditions. It is often used in naturalistic plantings, rain gardens, and as a component in wetland restoration projects due to its preference for moist environments. This grass is low maintenance and can be an attractive addition to gardens that aim to support native flora and fauna. It requires consistently moist soil and can tolerate partial shade, though it flourishes best in full sun. While it is not commonly afflicted by diseases or pests, it is important to ensure that it is not planted in areas that dry out, as it will not tolerate drought conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
