Summary
Monardella macrantha, commonly known as Hummingbird Mint or Red Monardella, is an evergreen perennial subshrub or herb native to the coastal sage scrub and chaparral of California, as well as the woodlands of Northwestern Mexico. It typically forms a low tuft of slender stems lined with thick, shiny green leaves up to 3 centimeters long. The inflorescence is a head of several tubular flowers blooming in a cup of red-tinged green bracts up to 4 centimeters wide. The clustered flowers are bright red to yellowish, sometimes exceeding 4 centimeters in length with narrow lobed mouths, and are highly attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies during their blooming season in late spring and summer.
Monardella macrantha is valued for its vibrant flowers and its ability to attract pollinators. It is used in native plant gardens, drought-tolerant landscapes, and for ecological restoration projects, where its low water requirements and adaptability to poor soils are beneficial. It is also appreciated for its aromatic foliage, which can be used in herbal preparations. This plant thrives in part shade to full sun, with low water needs once established, and prefers well-drained soils. While generally disease-free, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered. It is not known to be invasive but should be monitored to ensure it does not spread beyond desired areas.CC BY-SA 4.0
