Summary
Metrosideros diffusa, commonly known as white rata, climbing rata, or akakura in Maori, is a forest liane or vine that is endemic to New Zealand. It thrives in the understory of lowland and montane forests, often found clambering over shrubs and trees. This species is distributed throughout the North, South, and Stewart Islands. Metrosideros diffusa can climb up to 20 feet tall and features small, shiny, evergreen leaves that are typically up to 1 inch long. From mid-spring to early summer, it produces an abundance of white or pale pink flowers that are attractive to pollinators such as bees.
White rata is valued for its ornamental flowers and its ability to cover unsightly structures or provide a natural green cloak over fences and walls. It is also used for restoration planting and habitat enhancement due to its ecological role in native forests. In cultivation, it prefers moist, well-drained soils and can tolerate partial shade, making it suitable for woodland gardens or as a feature plant in shaded areas. ’Crystal Showers,’ a popular cultivar, is sought after for its white flowers and variegated foliage. While generally disease-resistant, it can be susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils. It is recommended to provide support for climbing and to manage its growth to prevent it from becoming too invasive in garden settings.CC BY-SA 4.0
