Summary
Mazus pumilio, commonly known as Swamp Mazus, is an evergreen perennial herb native to damp grasslands and along stream banks in Southeastern Australia and Tasmania. It typically forms a low-growing mat reaching a height of 0.2-0.3 feet (0.06-0.09 meters) and can spread to a width of 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 meters). The plant has small, lance-shaped leaves and produces a profusion of small, tubular flowers that are most commonly purple with yellow spots, though some may also be white, during the spring and summer months. These flowers are quite showy and attract pollinators.
Swamp Mazus is valued for its ability to cover the ground quickly, creating a dense carpet that can suppress weeds, making it an excellent choice for ground cover in wet areas of the garden. It is also used to stabilize soil along water features or in rain gardens. In cultivation, it thrives in full sun to part shade and requires consistently moist to wet soil with good drainage. While it is generally easy to maintain, it can become invasive in ideal conditions, spreading beyond its intended area. Gardeners should be aware of its potential to spread when planting it.CC BY-SA 4.0
