Lygeum spartum, commonly known as Esparto Grass or Cord Grass, is a perennial grass native to the western Mediterranean region, including parts of North Africa and Southern Europe. It is adapted to semi-arid climates, typically found in steppes and savannah-like areas. This grass is known for its tough, wiry leaves that grow up to 75 centimeters (30 inches) tall. Esparto Grass forms dense clumps and has a distinctive appearance with its narrow, rolled leaves that are gray-green in color. It produces inconspicuous flowers that are wind-pollinated. The plant is valued for its drought tolerance and its ability to thrive in poor soils.

Esparto Grass is used for its fibers in traditional crafts, such as basket weaving, and historically for making paper. In gardens, it serves as an ornamental grass, providing texture and interest to xeriscaping and rock gardens. It requires minimal maintenance, thriving in full sun with low water needs and tolerating a range of soil types, though it prefers well-drained soils.
