Summary
Lomelosia cretica, commonly known as Crete Scabious, Cretan Bluebell, or Cretan Pincushion Flower, is a perennial herb that is native to the Mediterranean Basin, specifically thriving in rocky habitats, maquis, garrigue, and open woodlands. It typically grows at a moderate rate to a height of 1-1.5 feet (0.3-0.5 meters) and a width of 0.5-1 feet (0.2-0.3 meters). This plant features lanceolate leaves and bears blue or purple flowers that are quite showy, blooming profusely in the summer and fall. The flowers are held above the foliage on slender stems and are attractive to pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
Lomelosia cretica is valued for its ornamental flowers and is used in rock gardens, borders, and as a ground cover due to its low-growing habit. It is drought-tolerant once established, making it suitable for xeriscaping and Mediterranean-style gardens. It requires full sun exposure to thrive and prefers well-drained loam or sandy soils. While it can tolerate low water conditions, moderate watering will encourage more abundant flowering. It is generally pest and disease-free but can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly draining soils. It is not known to be invasive and can be propagated by seed or division in the spring.CC BY-SA 4.0
