Summary

Lewisia cotyledon, commonly known as Siskiyou lewisia or cliff maids, is an evergreen perennial herb native to the rocky subalpine mountain habitats of southern Oregon and northern California. It thrives on cliffs and rocky slopes, often in areas with seasonal snowpack or near melting snowfields. The plant is well-adapted to its native alpine and subalpine environments, where it experiences cool, moist conditions and well-drained soils. Lewisia cotyledon typically grows from a thick taproot and caudex unit, reaching a height of 10–30 cm (4–12 in). Its flowering stems bear an array of up to 50 flowers, each with 7 to 13 petals that may be pale pink with darker veining, whitish with pinkish orange striping, or solid orange to yellow. The flowers, which bloom from spring to summer, are notable for their showy appearance and the small, pointed bracts tipped with resin glands that accompany them.

This plant is valued for its ornamental flowers and its ability to thrive in rock gardens and alpine garden settings. It is often used in border planting, as a ground cover, or in containers. Lewisia cotyledon is hardy down to −10 °C (14 °F) and is appreciated for its ease of maintenance and drought tolerance once established. In cultivation, it prefers full sun to part shade, low to medium water, and acidic to neutral soils with good drainage. While it is generally pest and disease-free, root rot can be a problem if the soil is not well-drained. It is important to avoid overwatering and to provide a winter mulch in colder regions to protect the crown from excessive moisture.CC BY-SA 4.0
